Lumber or trees cultivated and harvested for commercial purposes, is used in a wide range of industries. Timber's end products are among the most widely used goods in the world that include lumber, paper, cardboard, and various containers and packaging materials. In addition to these staple goods, timber has recently been used in the production of cellulosic ethanol that is one of the promising sources of renewable energy
Unlike other materials such as sand or concrete, commonly sold by the pound, lumber is sold by the piece. Once you know the number of pieces of lumber you need, you can then determine how much all those pieces are actually going to set you back.
Lumber is usually sold in two ways; one is by the lineal inch or by some method based on the square foot dimensions of the lumber being sold. Of the lineal inch, method of the pricing lumber is most familiar and simplest. Lumber sold by the lineal inch is cut to a specific width before it is offered for sale and the price is determined by the length of the material that is being purchased. Keep in mind that different lumberyards charge different prices if they are going to deliver the wood to your project.
Random width lumber is the lumber that is not cut to a specific width before it is sold and as the name implies, the width of boards sold as the random width lumber changes. Woodworkers who buy random-width lumber cut the lumber to width themselves, and understand that some amount of waste will be generated through this process.
Lumber pricing system for the random-width lumber has to take the varying widths of the boards that are being sold into account. The most basic method of pricing random-width lumber is by the "board foot." So, board feet of the lumber are calculated by multiplying the surface area of the lumber that is measured in square feet and by the thickness of the lumber measured in inches.
Softwood lumber has two groups one is construction and other is remanufacture. Construction grade lumber can be further split up into three categories, stress graded, no stress graded and last is appearance. Appearance and no stress grade lumber is commonly called yard lumber and it is what usually sold at retail lumberyards and is used by a lot of woodworkers. With stress and no stress the most important factor is to consider is how much strong the piece of lumber is. With appearance it is how aesthetically pleasing the piece looks like hardwoods or softwoods and is also graded by the worst face, unlike hardwoods and softwoods are always stamped with the grade.
Due to its role as a supplier to many different industries, the timber industry itself is subject to a force of number of external market. Conditions in the markets for paper, lumber, or other timber products largely determine the demand, and also lumber pricing, in the timber industry as a whole. In addition to events specific to individual markets, general changes in macroeconomic conditions, like increase in an interest rate can have implications for the timber industry.
